About The Vampire Diaries:The Vampire Diaries is an American TV show based on novels of the same name by L. J. Smith. The series, set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, follows Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy, who had recently been orphaned. On the first day of school, Elena bumps into the new kid Stefan Salvatore, who she instantly has a crush on. Things become complicated when Stefan reveals he is a vampire and his brother, Damon Salvatore, comes back to town looking to reunite with his lover Katherine Pierce. Katherine is Elena’s doppelgänger, who became a vampire to escape a ritual which would have killed her. After Katherine breaks his heart, a love triangle forms between Damon, Elena, and Stefan.
Other characters also have their own storylines. Elena’s best friends Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes also end up becoming involved in the supernatural. The Bennett family is a line of powerful witches throughout history. Bonnie learns all kinds of magic and becomes one of the strongest witches of all time. Caroline starts off as the rude but insecure girl. She always sees herself second best to Elena, who gets everybody’s attention. When she becomes a vampire through Damon’s blood in her system, Stefan becomes her mentor. Their close friendship and her new abilities turn her into one of the more caring and in control vampires of the series. She even opens a school to teach others how to control their powers by the end of the series.
The series has many different species, such as vampires, werewolves, witches, and hybrids. Even though they are the enemy, these characters are just as loved as the heroes. The Mikaelsons, the family which created the race of Vampires, and Katherine Pierce are examples of this. Klaus Mikaelson begins as a vampire whose werewolf side has been locked. Whilst the gang tries to stop the ritual to unlock this side of him as this ritual would kill Elena, Elijah Mikaelson is on their side. He saves Elena and plans to kill his half-brother. However, he stops as Klaus reveals he knows where their mother is. Rebekah Mikaelson, their younger sister, joins in and becomes frenemies with Elena. Other members (Kol, Finn, Ester and Mikael) also appear.
Katherine Pierce is probably the most loved enemy in the series. Through her actions, Caroline became a vampire against her choice. She has also tricked werewolves (who can kill vampires) into activating their curses and even helped Klaus to become a hybrid. This was all to save herself, which is her biggest characteristic. She will sacrifice someone else to survive, friend or family. However, sometimes her humanity wins, and she allows herself to care, such as choosing to save Damon’s life over freeing herself from Klaus. Whatever scene she is in, she steals it and even rivals Elena in popularity.
The series became the beginning of an entire franchise. This includes two spinoffs, The Originals (which focused on the original family of vampires), and Legacies (focusing on the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson introduced in The Originals) as well as comics and web series. The show has won many Teen Choices Awards, becoming a cultural icon for teenage fantasy dramas.
